St Clare’s Primary School was established in 2014. Since that time student numbers have steadily grown. As a result, the project brief called for six new learning areas specifically to accommodate year 5 & 6 students.
Our strategy was to place the new building to the east of the two existing wings, creating a courtyard which provides weather protection to the existing outdoor play areas. In discussions with the school, it was determined that additional specialist learning spaces were needed. The design accommodates two specialist learning spaces on the ground floor with the new 5/6 learning hub on the first floor. These additional spaces have been achieved within the original project budget.
The first floor extends beyond the ground floor footprint, creating much needed covered outdoor space. The ground floor spaces can be used for art, library, resource & multi-media functions and also may be used as a resource by parents and the broader school community. Covered links connect back to the existing school buildings.
On the first floor, a range of flexible learning spaces are provided. The spaces feature glazed sliding doors which allow spaces to easily be opened or closed to suit the learning needs. Distinctive pop-outs face the existing school buildings and provide timber lined nooks for small groups. The ends of the building feature large sliding doors with balustrades which provide natural ventilation.
